Toronto-based artist, Alexis Fraser, has created a name for herself in the art scene with both her lipstick art and her oil paintings which you can view at alexisfraserart.com. It is with her lipstick art however, that she has completely differentiated herself as a true artist. Not only is she creating captivating, timeless images that are nostalgic yet contemporary, she is literally KISSING the canvas to create these images. The process says it all.
After earning her BFA with a minor in education in 2011, her focus was to become a teacher. After a year of student teaching and writing endless lesson plans, Alexis quickly learned that although she enjoyed supplying a creative outlet for kids between the kinder years and grade 12, that she herself wasn’t creating anything other than lesson plans. It was at that point that her interest in teaching began to decline.
With a yearning to create her own art, she came to the conclusion that she would bite the bullet and make the leap towards becoming a full time artist. It was risky, but it was a risk she and her husband were willing to take. With art being her passion and her greatest talent, she figured life was too short not give the crazy idea try. But it wasn’t for the faint of heart.
Over the past 5 years, she has experienced significant ups and downs in her art career. She has felt greatness as the strides in her career have made leaps and bounds and has worked hard to bring her work to a level where its finally getting noticed.
However, in order for her to have risen to a point of recognition, she has had to endure the common struggles that most artists experience. For a handful of years she had difficulty finding her focus/niche. With a creative mind and the curiosity to dabble in a wide array of artistic mediums and subjects, finding her niche was half the battle and took the longest amount of time to figure out. Then there was the financial aspect. In Alexis’ words, “If it wasn’t for the support of my family and husband, I wouldn’t have been able to do my art full time. I’m incredibly fortunate to have been allowed the opportunity to take the risk of diving into this career path full time as many artists aren’t granted the same opportunities. I feel lucky that I can create in my studio all day and not have to break to work at the local cafe down the street in order to make ends meet. Although it’s been a challenging ride, the strides I’ve made far outweigh the risk. And like anything in life, good things come to those who work their derrière’s off! I didn’t come this far to only come this far.”
While building her two art businesses, brands, and portfolios, Alexis is also a wife to her high school sweetheart — who not only is her number one motivator but her business partner as well — she is also a mother to their 3 year old daughter who consistently keeps them on their toes.
“Being a mother is a full time job and beyond. I sometimes imagine how much more productive I’d be without her in the equation but then quickly remind myself how she and my husband are what keep me motivated. I don’t just want to build a successful art career for myself, but I sincerely want the success to provide for my family in the way I’ve always dreamt I would. Juggling my domestic duties and carving out my art career keeps me busy around the clock, but it also provides me with a sense of power as it proves to me how much I am actually able to accomplish. We are all given the same 24 hours in a day, how we choose to use those hours is solely up to us.
For me, I choose to work hard now so I can reap the benefits later. I create my own reality…”
